The Green Giant grows dense foliage in the shape of a tall pyramid. These trees grow from 3 to 5 feet in height each year. Went allowed to fully develop, they can grow 30 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide.

To define your property with full-sized Green Giant trees, plant them around the perimeter to make a hedge. You can also use them to line a driveway, create a privacy screen, and divide your yard into separate areas for a pool or tennis court.

To highlight a patio, outdoor cooking area, and individual flower beds, trim the tops of the Green Giants to make short hedges.

Depending on the look that you wish to create, you can plant Green Giants in single or double rows. For a single row, plant each tree approximately five feet apart. For a double row, stagger the trees so that the first row of trees grows between the trees of the second row. Plant these trees eight feet apart, and plant the rows four feet apart.

To make shorter hedges, plant a single row of trimmed Green Giants three feet apart and a double row five feet apart.

This evergreen tree species has flattened fan-like leaves that are soft in texture. When you cut or trim the branches of this tree, save the cuttings instead of composting or throwing them away. You can use the cuttings to create seasonal wreaths. You can also pair the cuttings with flowers and berries to create table centerpieces and decorative wall hangings.



For floral arrangements, cut longer branches and place them around and between cut flowers.

Before the spring and summer growing seasons, trim away dead and dying branches and any branches that are crowding other branches and growing in the wrong direction. This will allow you to shape your Green Giants so that new branches reach their full potential.

Water

In hot and dry weather, water your Green Giants underneath the crown of the tree. They do not need to be watered in cooler weather and when moisture is in the air, which makes them relatively low-maintenance in Jacksonville, where the weather is typically humid.

Fertilize

Fertilize your Green Giant trees with a water-soluble evergreen tree fertilizer that is high in nitrogen. Apply this fertilizer in low dosages in early spring and late August through September. Make a point to apply diluted fertilizer more often than apply full-strength fertilizer once. 

Mulch

To keep your Green Giants healthy, clear away grass and other vegetation that grows under the crown of the tree and next to the trunk. Cover this area with organic mulch to keep the grass and other vegetation from returning.
